Drug Uses

Effexor (Venlafaxine) is used to relieve the symptoms of depression. It works, primarily, by inhibiting the breakdown of two chemicals in the brain -- serotonin and norepinephrine-two -- which are thought to maintain communications between synapses in the region of the brain where mood is regulated. By correcting the imbalance in the secretion these brain chemicals, a person may be relived from gloomy or down state that a depressed person usually feels.

How Taken

Effexor XR comes in a form of capsule for oral consumption. The usual adminstration for this medicine is once a day after meals, and must be swallowed whole or by sprinkling the contents of an opened capsule on a spoonful of applesauce. The latter method of administering this drug is best for persons who vomit after ingesting a medicine, or those type of persons who hate to see themselves ingesting any type of medicine. When this method is used, the caregiver of a depressed person should ensure that the patient has swallowed the teaspoon of applesauce in one gulp, followed by a drink of a glass of water. This is to ensure that the entire dose of the medicine has been swallowed.

Warnings/Precautions

Before you begin on an Effexor XR therapy, inform your psychiatrist about the medicines that you are currently taking, most especially those that are used to treat heart diseases. Even medicines that you bought over-the-counter, herbals and supplements must be mentioned to your doctor. 
You should not take Effexor XR if you are under a MAOI medicine. If you are currently under a therapy with antidepressants, take caution in taking Effexor XR. You must be under a close supervision of your physician or a competent caregiver to monitor your condition. This is most especially true when you react to antidepressants and Effexor XR in a more destructive way, that is, you have this strong urge to suddenly end your life with your own hands. When this thought do cross your mind during the first week of treatment, your dose of Effexor XR may be increased or decreased, depending upon the observation and tests that you doctor will do. Other behavior that should be monitored during your first few weeks of Effexor XR treatment are: hostile even to family members, impulsive, restless, irritable and agitated. If these behaviors occur, report it immediately to your doctor. Effexor XR may also make a person hypertensive, so the rise and fall of blood pressure should be under close monitoring regularly. This medication needs tapering, so don't stop taking this medicine without the express consent of your doctor. Pregnant or nursing women are strictly disallowed to take this medicine or any other form of antidepressants, for that matter. Every person reacts differently to Effexor XR; thus, you must know first how Effexor XR affects your vision, breathing and spatial acuity before you do any physical activity, drive a car or operate heavy and complicated machineries. It is strictly prohibited to drink all types of liquors when you are under Effexor XR.

Missed Dose

Never ever take a double dose of this medicine for it may have a serious effect on you. If you missed a dose, take it on the next dosing schedule to avoid double dosing (especially if you were beginning to be forgetful).

Possible Side Effects

Almost all medicines have side effects. But before you try to know about the side effects of Effexor XR, know first if you have allergy to this medicine; side effects are annoying, yes, but having an allergy to a medicine is more than annoying, it's life-threatening. Here are the most common symptoms of someone who is suffering from an allergic reaction: swelling of the face, lips, tongue and redness in the eyes. Hives or rashes on the skin are very visible. It may be also that a person with allergies to Effexor XR may have difficulty in breathing, swallowing or closing the throat. Storage

Always store Effexor XR at 68F to 77F or 20C to 25C, or at room temperature. Never store it directly at sunlight. Sunlight might damage the integrity of the medicine's chemical components. Keep Effexor XR away from everyone's reach, most especially to children.

Overdose

If you suspect an overdose of Effexor XR, call your local poison center for first aid. Immediately after, seek for medical attention at the nearest hospital. A patient who has overdosed on Effexor XR may experience the following: nausea, dizziness, irregular heartbeats, numbness on hands and face, seizure and unconsciousness.

More Information

Effexor XR may cause dizziness or a headache especially during the first few weeks of taking it.
