Fluvoxamine is used for:

Fluvoxamine is an antidepressant belonging to a group of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). It is prescribed to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as well as other states as directed by the doctor.

Fluvoxamine acts by increasing levels of a brain chemical called serotonin that influences mood and behavior.

Do NOT use Fluvoxamine if:

  • you have had any allergic reactions to any Fluvoxamine ingredient
  • you are taking thioridazine, terfenadine, astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor as well as metoclopramide, serotonergic drugs (e.g. 5-HT 1 agonists, tramadol, linezolid, lithium, St. John's wort), or sympathomimetics
  • you are using or have used a monoamine oxidase inhibitor for the last 14 days

Be sure your doctor is aware in case any of the abovementioned applies to you.

Before using Fluvoxamine...

...and in order to avoid life-threatening conditions to your health, inform your doctor if

  • you are allergic to any foods, medicines, or other substances
  • you are taking any medications, dietary supplements, or herbal products
  • you have stomach bleeding
  • you have seizures, mania, a history of suicidal activity
  • you are pregnant or planning pregnancy
  • you are breast-feeding

It is significant for your doctor to know if you are using any other medications as they may interplay with Fluvoxamine and cause adverse complications. The following list is not complete, so consult with your doctor before you start any medicine.

  • The following medicines in combination with Fluvoxamine may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome (e.g. sudden irritability, higher muscle tone):
  • anorexiants, butyrophenones, fenfluramine/its derivatives, buspirone, dextromethorphan, linezolid, lithium, l-tryptophan, metoclopramide, MAO inhibitors, sumatriptan, selegiline, tetracyclic antidepressants, or tramadol.
  • Fluvoxamine may increase adverse effects of the following medicines:
  • anticoagulants, alosetron, aspirin, aripiprazole, atypical antipsychotics, beta-blockers, benzodiazepines, butyrophenones, cisapride, cyclosporine, carbamazepine, H1 antagonists, galantamine, hydantoins, methadone, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, lithium, nefazodone, mexiletine, phenothiazines, pimozide, risperidone, propafenone, sibutramine, serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, tacrine, tetracyclic antidepressants, tizanidine, theophylline, or tricyclic antidepressants.
  • Fluvoxamine may decrease the strength of sumatriptan or cisapride.
  • Trazodone or St. John's wort in combination with Fluvoxamine may cause unexpected side effects.
  • Risperidone or cyproheptadine may decrease the strength of Fluvoxamine

How to use Fluvoxamine :

You should STRICTLY follow the dosing instructions to make the treatment effective and to avoid overdosing.

  • Fluvoxamine should be taken with/without food but with water, exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Try not to miss any doses. If a dose is missed and you are using one dose each day, use the missed dose the same day. If you are taking more doses daily, leave out the missed dose and do not double doses at the same time.
  • Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while you take Fluvoxamine.
  • If you feel your condition is improving, do not give up but keep taking Fluvoxamine.

Important safety information:

  • Fluvoxamine may cause lightheadedness or giddiness, thus drive or perform any implicitly dangerous tasks that require your alertness only after you know how you respond to Fluvoxamine.
  • Fluvoxamine is affected by alcohol. Consult with your doctor if you drink more than 3 alcohol-containing drinks each day.
  • Fluvoxamine is not used to treat CHILDREN younger than 8 years of age as there is no confirmation of safety and efficiency in this age group.
  • Fluvoxamine is used with utmost caution in CHILDREN between 8 and 18 years of age.
  • Fluvoxamine like other antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal activity in children and teenagers especially with bipolar illness known as manic-depressive illness, with a family history of this illness or a suicidal history. Therefore these patients must be under close observation and if any changes in their moods or behavior occur or worsen, emergency medical help is required.
  • In case of PREGNANCY consult with your doctor about the risks of taking Fluvoxamine.

Fluvoxamine should not be stopped to be taken suddenly as this may lead to adverse WITHDRAWAL symptoms, that is, agitation, anxiety, confusion, giddiness, unusual skin sensations, sudden mood swings, headache, trouble sleeping, irritability, nausea, lethargy, or sweating. If it is necessary to stop taking Fluvoxamine, the doctor will reduce the dose step by step.

Possible side effects of Fluvoxamine :

Fluvoxamine like any medication may cause negative side effects; nevertheless lots of patients have no, or slight effects. If any of the following COMMON side effects persevere or bother you, contact your doctor immediately:

Change in taste; loss of appetite; vomiting; constipation; diarrhea; gas; indigestion; frequent urination; changes in sexual function; delayed ejaculation; impotence; chills; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; fatigue; flu-like symptoms; flushing; headache; lightheadedness; nervousness; sweating; tiredness; weakness; tooth disorder

If the following SEVERE side effects are suspected, immediate medical attention is required:

Bizarre behavior, mental/mood changes, severe restlessness, suicidal activity; insomnia; tremor; seizures or depression worsening; pounding in the chest; fast heartbeat; difficulty swallowing; fever; hives; rash; difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, or tongue; vision problems.

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
